Dear Sunnyview Family,

I am fascinated by the resolutions that are made in January.  I usually make a resolution to gain 30 to 50 pounds by this time next year, that way if I do not reach my goal I feel a great sense of relief.  I have yet to reach this goal, but I am quite content with this failed resolution.

Many people make resolutions this time of year with vigor and great intentions, but somewhere along the way that intensity diminishes and the resolutions are dismissed.  I think many resolutions are quickly abandoned because they are made looking back on life and fail to make the transition from wishful thinking to real life.  Imagine a small child learning to ride a bike, a runner running for the prize, a soldier in a battle, or even a person driving to work. They are all focused on what is in front of them.  No significant forward progress is made by focusing on what is behind – the same is true with living out the Christian life (Hebrews 12:1-3).

This month we will be looking at the Pillars on which the Christian life is built.  These pillars do not shake in troubling circumstances and they do not move to accommodate different beliefs or resolutions to uncertainty.  The greatest challenge that a Christian faces today is to embrace the life that Jesus died for us to have and live it with more fervor than when we first became Christians. I hope that you will join me as we study the "Pillars of the Christian Life" as presented in 1 John this month.

 God Bless,

Jim
